We analyzed millions of transactions on Magescan and found something fascinating about gas price behavior during volatile periods. When networks get congested, users don’t just pay more. They massively overpay in ways that suggest pure panic rather than rational calculation.
During the last major NFT mint that clogged Ethereum, the average overpayment was 340%. Users were paying 3.4 times more than necessary to get their transactions included in a block.
How do we know they overpaid? Because we can look at what gas prices actually succeeded in getting transactions included, and compare them to what people paid. If you paid 200 gwei and got included in a block where the minimum successful gas price was 60 gwei, you overpaid by 233%.

Liquidation protection: If your DeFi position is about to get liquidated and you need to add collateral or close the position, every second counts. Overpaying gas here is rational. You’re comparing the gas cost against the liquidation penalty, which is usually much larger.
MEV-vulnerable trades: If you’re making a large trade that could get front-run or sandwiched, fast execution protects you from extraction. The urgency premium is worth it because you’re defending against a specific, measurable threat.
Time-sensitive arbitrage: If you’ve identified an arbitrage opportunity that will disappear as soon as someone else takes it, racing to be first is the entire game. Premium gas is part of the cost of doing business.
Competitive mints with limited supply: If there are 1,000 NFTs and 10,000 people trying to mint, gas price becomes your lottery ticket. Higher gas means better odds. This is actually a rational urgency premium.
But here’s what we found: only about 15-20% of transactions paying premium gas actually fall into these legitimately urgent categories. The other 80-85% are paying urgency premiums for urgency that doesn’t exist.

Professional traders don’t just pay whatever gas price their wallet suggests. They time their transactions based on predictable patterns in network activity.

So wallets err on the side of overestimation. Sometimes dramatically so.
We compared suggested gas prices across five major wallets during the same 24-hour period. The variation was wild. For the same network conditions, suggested “fast” gas ranged from 45 gwei to 120 gwei. They couldn’t all be right, which means most were wrong.
The wallets suggesting higher gas weren’t providing better service. They were just extracting more money from users who trusted their defaults.
What This Means For Your Next Transaction
Before you click confirm on your next transaction, ask yourself one question: “What does waiting cost me?”
If the answer is “nothing” or “very little,” you’re in the vast majority of cases where urgency is optional. Set your gas to the lower end of acceptable ranges. Wait for off-peak hours if possible. Stop participating in gas wars you don’t need to fight.
